The Woman’s Auxiliary to the American Medical Association was established on May 24, 1922, with the Woman’s Auxiliary to the South Carolina Medical Association being organized the following year in Charleston. The object of the organization was to “extend the aims of the medical profession through the wives of doctors to the various women’s organizations which look to the advancement in health and education, to assist in entertainment at all medical conventions, and to promote acquaintance among doctors’ families so that local unity and harmony may be increased.”
In 1926, the inaugural Auxiliary project was to create a memorial to South Carolina native Dr. J. Marion Sims (1813-1883). Known as the “father of gynecology,” the Woman’s Auxiliary to the South Carolina Medical Association collected funds across the state and many county auxiliaries were organized.
The Woman’s Auxiliary to the Greenville County Medical Society was organized on January 10, 1927 with 25 charter members.
The name was changed in 1977 to the Greenville County Medical Society Auxiliary. The name changed again in 2000 to the Greenville County Medical Society Alliance.
