Scope and Contents

The Rev. F. Townley Lord D.D. Papers contain albums, articles, diaries, editorials, essays, journals, manuscripts, papers, sermons, and scripts reflecting the career of a British clergyman, scholar, editor and author. The material spans from 1909-1962 with the bulk from 1941-1957. The collection focuses on Lord’s time as editor of the Baptist Times from 1941-1956, as Vice President of the Baptist World Alliance starting in 1947, and his Presidency starting three years later, serving until the Jubilee Congress in London in 1955.

During his time as editor for the Baptist Times, he traveled throughout Europe and to North and South America, documenting his travels with essays published in the Baptist Times. These articles are pasted into composition notebooks. Some handwritten diaries are included.

Lord traveled the world during his time as President of the Baptist World Alliance. In 1954, he visited Hungary, the U.S.S.R, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. One album, The History of Russian Baptists, from The Board of the Evangelical Christian Baptist Union in the U.S.S.R, June 1954, is in Russian.
