Arrangement

This collection is arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of eight documents, the first a contract for labor with freedmen, and the remainder for renting farmland.

John D. Williams is probably John Drayton Williams (1798-1870), a merchant and plantation owner in Laurens County, S.C.

Seven of the contracts were made by either John S. Hill (1843-1909) or his wife, Susan J. Hill (1845-1927).  John S. Hill was born in Laurens County, S.C., and after the Civil War settled in Greenville, working as a dry goods merchant, a U.S. Postmaster, and a liquor dispenser at the East End Dispensary from 1893 to 1901. Hill married Susan Jane Walker (1845-1927) in 1871.
