This collection contains a typescript draft of Lancaster’s Ph.D. Dissertation “The Origins of Native White Republicanism in NC, 1850-1868,” including maps and tables, 439 pages.  This manuscript was submitted November 21, 1973. Lancaster’s final dissertation was The Scalawags of North Carolina, 1850-1868, Princeton University, 1974. Lancaster indicates that the purpose of the dissertation is to “identify the people, to investigate their antecedents and the historical situation which compelled them to adapt the Republican label, and to explain their motives, program, and success in winning control of the State in 1867 and 1868.”
