Organizational Sketch

The Greenville Homemakers Club was organized on March 13, 1950. It was officially affiliated with the American Home Economics Association (AHEA) and the South Carolina Home Economics Association (SCHEA) on December 5, 1950.

The organization of the Homemaker’s Club began on Saturday, November 5, 1949 when a group of Greenville home economics trained homemakers met during the meeting of the South Carolina Home Economics Association upon the invitation of Mrs. Ethel R. Watters, Home Economics professor at Furman University [1945-1957]. The group expressed a desire to have a homemaker’s club in Greenville.

The objectives of the club were the development and promotion of standards of home and family life that will further individual and social welfare. Membership was limited to thirty homemakers having a degree in Home Economics or a related field from an accredited college or university.

The club met frequently at the Furman Home Management House on the downtown campus.
