The collection includes correspondence, surveys, reports, studies, diaries, publications, minutes, and administrative records. Important subjects include Negro education, general education, education in the south, rural education, teacher education, agriculture and agricultural economics, farm demonstrations, medical education and nursing, accounting, development of public school systems, state departments of education and education associations.
Series 1, Administrative
Includes the initial grant proposal, annual reports and other major reports, correspondence, minutes of Council meetings and staff meetings, planning documents, and staff activity reports.
Series 2, Financial
Comprised of budgets and budget proposals, correspondence, financial statements, and statements of receipts and disbursements.
Series 3, Committees
Reports, minutes, and correspondence of eleven committees and subcommittees. Most significant and extensive are the minutes of the Executive Committee and the Committee on Interracial Cooperation.
Series 4, Gordon Blackwell
Prior to becoming the university’s eighth president in 1965, Blackwell was head of the Sociology Department at Furman. He spent a significant portion of his time between 1937 and 1940 working with the GCCCD. This series includes his correspondence related to the GCCCD and materials for those courses whose students used GCCCD as a laboratory.
Series 5, Laura Smith Ebaugh
Laura Smith Ebaugh was a Furman Sociology professor who worked closely with the GCCCD. This series includes her correspondence, reports, writings, and clippings documenting her work in the community.
Series 6, Activities and Projects
This extensive series includes correspondence, reports, publications, and clippings documenting the activities and projects undertaken by the GCCCD and its various committees and area councils.
Series 7, Visual Materials
Lantern slides (32) and a series of black and white photographs separated by size.
