Forest Hills Baptist Church Records, 1950-2006

Organizational History

Forest Hills Baptist Church is in the Woodfields Community south of Greenville. The community developed near Donaldson Air Force Base at the end of World War II. In 1950, the Greenville Baptist Association was encouraging the starting of new churches in new housing areas like Woodfields. Reverend Hoyt E. and Mrs. Lura Porter had recently retired from their service as home missionaries in Kentucky and moved to the Woodfields area. They saw a need for a church in the community and began visiting door to door, which eventually led to the constituting of Woodfields Baptist Church on February 25, 1951. Hoyt served as the first pastor.

The church initially met in the Belton R. O’Neall Real Estate office located on Ridgeway Drive. In January 1952, the church moved to a newly built block basement on the property at 38 Crestfield Road that had been donated by O’Neall. In an effort to attract members from beyond the Woodfields Community, the name of the church was changed to Forest Hills in February 1955. An addition was added to the back of the block basement in August 1956. The next building phase in 1957 saw the construction of the auditorium atop the block basement, which was dedicated on July 12, 1959. The educational wing was completed in 1969.

On August 1, 2004, the church voted to dissolve. The last service was September 26. 2004.
