Scope and Contents

The papers of E.A. McDowell, Jr. date from 1932 to 1974. The majority of this collection consists of correspondence, writings, and teaching materials that deal with race relations, Southern Baptist and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminaries, and the Christian role in issues of social justice (1933-1967). Subjects covered include the First Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia; fundamentalist critiques of McDowell’s writings; Lake Yale Baptist Assembly; Baptist Catholic Fellowship; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; Southern Baptist Convention Committee on Race Relations; and Southeastern Seminary.

The correspondence is mainly recipient copies, with some carbon copies that are now very fragile. Box 7 contains a collection of pamphlets written mainly on the subject of race relations.
