Organizational History

The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) was established in Greenville, S.C. in 1859 with Furman University’s theological department that included James P. Boyce, the professor of theology. The seminary also took Furman’s endowment fund raised for theological education, amounting to $26,000, and Furman’s theological library. After being closed during the Civil War, it moved in 1877 to a newly built campus in downtown Louisville, Ky. and moved to its current location in 1926 in the Crescent Hill neighborhood.
