Biography

  • Born in Charleston, South Carolina, May 28, 1837, son of Rev. Basil Manly, Sr.

  • Charles grew up in Tuscaloosa, Ala. while his father was President of the University of Alabama.

  • After graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary, Charles served as pastor to several churches, was President of Union University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, from 1871 to 1873.

  • Former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Greenville.

  • President of Furman University 1881 to 1897.

  • After serving at Furman, Manly returned to a full time pastor’s position until 1914.

  • Manly passed away in Gaffney, South Carolina, May 1, 1924.
