Born in Charleston, South Carolina, May 28, 1837, son of Rev. Basil Manly, Sr.
Charles grew up in Tuscaloosa, Ala. while his father was President of the University of Alabama.
After graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary, Charles served as pastor to several churches, was President of Union University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, from 1871 to 1873.
Former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Greenville.
President of Furman University 1881 to 1897.
After serving at Furman, Manly returned to a full time pastor’s position until 1914.
