Biographical Sketch

Bennie Ward Sinclair was the mother of Waldo Graham Sinclair, Jr., “Buster” and Bennie Sinclair Lewis, “Snookie”.  She was married to Waldo Graham Sinclair (1912 – 1960).  Sinclair worked in the Register of Mesne Conveyance for Greenville County, and owned and operated Jones Employment Agency 1950-1966.

Son Waldo G. “Buster” Sinclair, Jr. attended Clemson, and then attended The Citadel 1951-1955.  He served in the U.S. Army eight years, including as a First Lieutenant with the 371st A.I.B. during the Berlin Crisis.  “Buster” died in Asheville, N.C. in 1967 from a brain aneurysm.  He was living in Augusta, Ga. with his wife, the former Josephine “Joy” Simpson.

Daughter Bennie Lee Sinclair Lewis (1939 – 2000) was an American poet, novelist, short story writer, and Furman alumnus ’61. Governor Richard Wilson Riley named her the fifth South Carolina Poet Laureate from 1986 to 2000.
