Biographical Sketch

Dr. Winston C. Babb was an Easley, S.C. native, son of Dr. Earl V. and Agnes Chandler Babb. He graduated from Furman in 1934, and joined the Furman faculty as assistant professor of history in 1946. He became chairman of the department in 1960 replacing Dr. D.H. Gilpatrick. Babb was chair of the Furman faculty from 1966-1968. Babb died on January 21, 1968.

A native of Saginaw, Mich., Dr. D.H. Gilpatrick received his degrees from Stetson University (Baptist) and Columbia University. He also studied at George Peabody College for Teachers. Gilpatrick joined Furman in 1926 as a history professor and was named chairman of the department in 1947. He continued in that post until 1960. From 1960-1968 he was a part-time history instructor at the university. He received a doctor of literature degree from Furman University in 1964. Gilpatrick died on March 16, 1981.
