Grand Opera House Programs (Greenville, S.C.), 1901-1907

Organizational Sketch

The Grand Opera House in Greenville opened with a dedication performance on October 10, 1901. Built by the Grand Opera House Company, the groundbreaking took place in July 1900 at the intersection of Laurens, Coffee and Buncombe Streets (Greenville Five Points). The company was assured that $4,000 worth of tickets, costing $3 a piece, would be subscribed and paid for by the citizens of Greenville.

With an expanded railroad available, the Grand Opera House hosted acts from all over the country - including Broadway, opera, vaudeville, early silent films, minstrel shows, magic acts, even the occasional boxing match. The last performance in the building took place in 1923, with the building then being transformed into a hotel and shops.
