This collection documents the activities of Furman University’s Board of Trustees and the administration during 1990-1991 that led up to the split between Furman University and the S.C. Baptist Convention (SCBC) on May 16, 1992. Materials include correspondence, agendas, minutes, memos, notes, resolutions, and newspaper clippings.

The restricted material includes meeting minutes of the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees through June 28, 1991, and materials in preparation for the July 30, 1991 meeting where Furman trustees were to approve a plan allowing the SCBC to participate in the selection of the school’s trustees.

Unrestricted material includes responses to the Board of Trustees actions in October 1990 and include correspondence and resolutions. General files include correspondence and memos between Furman, SCBC and legal counsel. There are undated handwritten notes by Mickel. Marguerite Hays, Furman University Communications, sent Mickel the majority of newspaper clippings.
