The manuscript notebook is inscribed by Mignonette B. Johnson, Clara Conway Institute, Memphis, dated September 23, 1891 to December 6, 1891. The Clara Conway Institute was a major preparatory school for young women; its founder considered one of the most prominent figures in education in the South. The notebook contains notes on U. S. History, Grecian history and Roman history. The notebook contains hand drawn maps in pencil, including one of the ancient world, another of American Revolutionary campaigns, another of Italy about 150 B.C. Conservation treatment in 2017 included replacing the covers.
The Vassarion Vassar College yearbook for 1896 is inscribed to Mignonette B. Johnson from Rose Palmer, May 27, 1896, and both are listed as seniors. Vassar College was founded in 1865 in Poughkeepsie, New York and offered young women a liberal arts education equal to that of the best men’s colleges of the day.
