John P. Frank Papers, 1957-1979

Arrangement

The collection consists of research materials that were originally contained in 16 notebooks. The material was rehoused into folders and kept in the donor’s original order.

Scope and Contents

The John P. Frank Papers consist of research materials Frank gathered while researching his biography of Judge Clement F. Haynsworth, Jr., Clement Haynsworth, the Senate, and the Supreme Court published in 1991. The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, legislative bills, newspaper clippings, notes, photographs, speeches, and writings. Frank utilized the Haynsworth Papers at Furman University and photocopies are included in this collection.

Frank’s research focused on Supreme Court appointments, 1968-1970; Abe Fortas, Clement Haynsworth, Jr., G. Harrold Carswell, and Harry Blackmun. Notebooks G, H, I, J, K contain material collected by Johnnie M. Walters who kept files on the Haynsworth nomination. Walters helped prepare witnesses who appeared before the committee.

The Miscellaneous Notebook contains materials from October 1969 and notes of a conversation with Judge Clement Haynsworth, Harry Haynsworth, and John P. Frank, June 26, 1971.
