LibGuides Standards and Best Practices

Overview

If you are new to the LibGuides software, we encourage you read and/or watch the following resources prior to using the system. If you need hands-on training, contact us at librarywebservices@furman.edu.

Layout, Guide Type, and Groups

Screen for creating a new guideWhen you create a new guide, you will be asked a series of questions about templates and groups. What you select will vary depending on what kind of page/guide you are trying to create. See an overview below:

Layout

You have 2 choices of layout:

  1. Tabbed navigation. Select "use system default template"
  2. Side navigation: Select "Furman Side-Nav Layout"

Guide Type

Guide type has no impact on the creation of a guide, so you can leave this "General Purpose."

Group Assignment

Assign your guide to the following group. The group will impact the template, design, and layout of the guide. If you are creating a generic web page that does not fit into any of the groups below, do not assign it to a group.

  1. Database Guides - All guides related to databases should be in this group.
  2. Digital Collections Center - All content on the Digital Collections Center website should be in this group.
  3. First Year Seminars - All guides for FYW courses should be in this group.
  4. Maxwell Music Library - All content on the Music Library website should be in this group.
  5. May Experience - All guides for MayX courses should be in this group.
  6. Sanders Science Library - All content on the Sanders Science Library website should be in this group.
  7. Special Collections & Archives - All content on the Special Collections website should be in this group.
