Counseling and Values is the official journal of the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC), formerly the Association for Religious and Values Issues in Counseling (ARVIC), a division of the American Counseling Association.

The journal publishes empirically-based work which explores the relationships between mental health and aspects of religion and culture, and discusses conceptual and philosophical aspects. Contributions are encouraged from a range of disciplines including: psychiatry, psychology, anthropology, sociology and other social sciences, philosophy, theology and religious studies, community and social work, counselling and pastoral work.

Published papers include clinical and other case material, observational and interview material, survey, questionnaire, psychometric and other quantified data. There is also scope for scholarly review and presentation of historical material, religious texts and other textual material. Systematic reviews, meta-analysis, and theoretical and philosophical analysis are welcomed.

In addition, the Journal of Counseling Psychology considers reviews or theoretical contributions that have the potential for stimulating further research in counseling psychology, and conceptual or empirical contributions about methodological issues in counseling psychology research.

The Journal of Counseling Psychology considers manuscripts that deal with clients who are not severely disturbed, who have problems with living, or who are experiencing developmental crises. Manuscripts that deal with the strengths or healthy aspects of more severely disturbed clients also are considered. The Journal of Counseling Psychology also considers manuscripts that focus on optimizing the potentials, accelerating the development, or enhancing the well-being of non-client populations.

Both quantitative and qualitative methods are appropriate. Extensions of previous studies, implications for public policy or social action, and counseling research and applications are encouraged.

The journal attempts to break down the divide between theory and practice in one of the most critical areas of our work: social transformation toward social and ecological justice and peace. This journal features action oriented articles, meaning manuscripts that discuss actual work (e.g., advocacy, activism, research, policy formulation and implementation, training, legislation) that has been conducted by the submitting author(s) and not proposed work or simple conceptualizations of issues.JSACP features four unique sections: Activism and Advocacy, Education and Training, Policy and Theory, Program Development and Evaluation.
