Instructions for Playing DVDs

Viewing in the Duke Library:

  • In the 24-hour study lounge, 3 computers include DVD players. Bring your own wired headphones.
  • On the lower level, you can ask at the ITS Service Desk to use the Media Viewing Room.

Viewing in the Music Library:

  • 2 computers include DVD players.
  • You can borrow wired headphones from the circulation desk.

Regardless of region, DVDs should be played using the software VLC. Instructions:

  1. After inserting the DVD into the DVD drive, a notification will appear prompting you to choose what happens with DVD movies.
  2. If you are using Windows 10 on a PC, click on the notification once it appears.  If it disappears before clicking on it, simply reinsert the DVD into the drive.
  3. After clicking on the notification, a window will open giving you several options of what to do with the DVD. Select the option to play with   VideoLAN VLC Player. Depending on the DVD, either the disc menu will appear or the film will start playing.

DVD Regions

In addition to traditional region 1 (North America) films, Furman purchases foreign films. In order to play non-region 1 films you must use the software VLC. Read the instructions on this page or contact the Information Technology Helpdesk by email or at 864-294-3277.
