Instruction and Research Services

The Instruction and Research Services Division connects the Furman community with the library through collaborative, creative, and dynamic programs and services, including research consultation, information fluency instruction, circulation, interlibrary loan, collection development, and supervising the opening and closing of the Libraries.

Division Responsibilities

Instruction and Research Services

  • Interacts with all incoming students, staff and faculty
  • Provides research assistance
  • Teaches research and information fluency skills and collaborates with faculty to develop quality research assignments
  • Liaises with academic departments
  • Maintains a vibrant and relevant reference collection
  • Creates a web presence that provides subject and course-specific access to recommended resources
  • Communicates library news, resources, and training with the campus and beyond through the newsletter and social media
  • Collaborates with campus and community partners to plan and support events, themes, and collections
  • Designs programs and events to promote the library’s places, resources, and services

 

Access Services

  • Facilitates access to materials both owned and not owned by the Furman University Libraries through Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery
  • Shares resources from the Furman Library with library partners throughout the world
  • Circulates physical resources; monitors timely return, item condition, and need for replacement; replaces items on shelves
  • Maintains collections through inventory, shifting and de‐selection and withdrawal
  • Supervises opening and closing of the Furman University Libraries, safety and maintenance of the facilities and personnel support of the Science and Music Libraries.
