Finding books

Three Places to Look for Books

Start with the library catalog using this search box (see searching hints for help)

If the book you want is not at Furman, or is checked out, PASCAL will search for it at another South Carolina academic library and it sent to you here. Click on the PASCAL icon in Furman's catalog, or use this search box. (Quick PASCAL tutorial)

If you still cannot find the item you want, search WorldCat, a catalog of libraries around the country and the world, using this search box:

From WorldCat you can request the item through InterLibrary Loan. (New to ILL? Here's more information.)

Hints for Searching For Books

Hints for Searching:

  • Use keyword searching for a narrow or complex search topic. Use the Boolean operators and, or and not to combine keywords together.
  • Look at the subject headings of the records you pull up to see if any of them might lead you to other relevant sources.
  • Text []or write down the call number of the book so you can find it on the shelf. Pay attention to  its location and its status
  • Many of our books are ebooks, available over the web. Click here to find out more about ebooks.
  • Once you get the book, use the index and table of contents to locate specific pages or chapters of useful information.
