Vestal Virgins

Vestal virgins

Vestal Virgins were the priestesses of Vesta. At Rome their number was at first four, but was increased to six during the last years of the kings. The time of service was thrity years: ten for learning, ten for performing, and ten for teaching the duties. At the end of this time, they were allowed to return to private life and to marry. (from Bulfinch's Mythology: The Age of Fable - 1903.)
