Books by Subject

It is always best to start by looking for books on your composer. If you are unable to find any, try to place the work within a compositional style, then do a search by subject.

Search for dissertations

ProQuest indexes about 90% of the dissertations written in the United States.  Dissertations can be great resources for analysis of works, interviews with composers, and extensive bibliographies.  Allow time to request a copy through interlibrary loan. More information on locating dissertations online can be found in our Get the Full Text guide.  You might also try Music Index or RILM, and limit the search to dissertations.
